How do we join American Adoptions to begin the process of adopting?

The first step in joining American Adoptions is to call and speak with an Adoptive Family Coordinator about our agency and your adoption needs/wants. Our application process is designed to ensure that you feel ready to develop a partnership with us, while also allowing us the opportunity to ensure that your expectations align with ours and that both parties will be a good fit for one another. We believe this mutual assessment process is a key element in building a partnership with our adoptive families. If you have not yet spoken with one of our Adoptive Family Coordinators, please do so before completing the below application.

After completing the pre-application and submitting the fee, you will be asked to complete an Adoption Planning Questionnaire (APQ), which will outline your adoption needs and preferences. Your APQ will be reviewed by an adoptive family specialist to ensure our program will be a good fit for you and that now is a good time for your family to join our agency. If our specialists feel that we are the right professional to serve you in your adoption, you will be approved to officially join the agency and move forward with the process. Please note that sometimes in our process, we find that a family is not best suited to work with our agency. It does not mean that a family is not meant to be adoptive parents or that we question their ability to be wonderful parents, simply that we are not the right professional to serve them in their adoption. Please call to speak with an Adoptive Family Coordinator if you have questions about the application process.

How much is the Application Fee for adoptive families, and what happens next?

Once you have filled out the application and paid the application fee, your family will receive our Adoption Planning Questionnaire (APQ), which you will complete with your adoption needs and preferences. Please note that this application is only the first step in the screening process. Before you can officially join American Adoptions' program, an adoptive family specialist will review your APQ to determine whether our agency can best meet your family's needs. The application fee is $995.00 and is non-refundable.

Adoptive Family Online Account

Once you have submitted your preliminary application, you will receive access to your online account, which you will log in to via www.AmericanAdoptions.com. Your online account will provide you access to additional educational materials, including videos and the Preparing for a Successful Adoption manual.

Preparing for a Successful Adoption Manual/Educational Videos

The Preparing for a Successful Adoption manual will educate your family on our adoption process and domestic adoption, in general. It will also assist you as you develop your adoption plan. You must read this manual in its entirety and speak with your Adoptive Family Coordinator before proceeding to the next step in the process.

Adoption Planning Questionnaire (APQ)

In addition to serving as an application material and screening tool, this questionnaire will allow your family to create your own adoption plan. You will select options, such as the race(s) of the baby you are open to adopting, your adoption budget, preferred degree of contact with birth parents, etc. Once you fill out and send in the APQ, we will review your answers with you to determine whether our agency is a good fit for your family and discuss how your APQ will affect your family's wait time.

Print Profile Development Kit

After being accepted into our program, you will gain access through your account to our print profile development kit. Your profile is your marketing tool to reach pregnant women. With the help of our design and editing team, each family will create their own adoptive family profile to present to pregnant mothers.

Home Study Information

All families will receive educational materials about the home study process. If your family is having a home study completed by American Adoptions, we will walk you through the completion of your home study. If your family is having your home study completed by another professional, we will provide you with information outlining what specific information must be included in your home study.

How often do the adoption programs fees and wait times change?

American Adoptions reviews this information regularly. Fees are subject to change at any time and may change prior to your family going active with the agency. American Adoptions will honor the fees for the activation agreement your family signs, but if fees change prior to your activation, your family is subject to the new fee structure.

What do we need to know about American Adoptions' domestic adoption program before applying?

Our adoption program involves the adoption of healthy infants and newborns throughout the United States. Families will be asked to set certain preferences for their adoption, which will help to determine the types of adoption opportunities they are considered for and will receive.

Gender specificity is not an option except in rare circumstances whereby an exception is granted. You MUST receive an exception to be gender specific prior to submitting an application, so please contact your Coordinator at 1-800-ADOPTION before proceeding.

All families must meet the following eligibility requirements to submit an application.

Parent Eligibility:

Legally married for a minimum of 2 years
Between 25-50 years of age
At least one parent is U.S. Citizen
Couple has no more than two children and no child under the age of 1 year old

By submitting this preliminary application, you acknowledge that you are ready, willing and able to adopt a child, that there will be additional requirements before an adoption can be completed and that you would like to be considered for our program. By submitting a preliminary application, you acknowledge that you will be required to complete additional application materials before being accepted into our program. By submitting a preliminary application, you acknowledge that, should your family be accepted into our program, you will be required to submit photos, text and video for the purpose of marketing your family to expectant mothers.

Before providing services to prospective adoptive families, the adoption agency shall advise the family of the Department's responsibility for licensing and monitoring agencies, and the public's right to register a complaint about an agency.
